Here at Owę:naʼ Poetry Magazine we publish original poetry written by members of the Six Nations of the Grand River territory. We publish four magazines per year, one per season. In keeping with a Good Mind, Owę:naʼ Poetry Magazine aims to stay accessible and safe for youth and children to enjoy. Submissions should not include explicit language or overtly violent or sexual content. We will not publish work that has been published elsewhere. 

RATES & RIGHTS

Owę:naʼ Poetry Magazine loves paying our writers. Poets are paid only when their poetry is selected for publishing. A meeting between publisher and poet is mandatory prior to any poem being published.

FEATURED POETS: receive 20 cents per word, up to 200 words per published feature.
MOSCOT MEMOIRS POETS: receive 10 dollars per published poem.
Each published Poet will also receive a copy of the magazine.

Poets retain rights to all their poetry but Owę:naʼ reserves the right to republish printed poetry, in the future. All poetry must have been written by you, and be slice of life poetry that empowers both Poets and Readers to see the light in our Ǫgwehoweh lives. 

POETRY CATEGORIES

FEATURED POETS
Each poet will have one page onto which their poetry will be featured. You can only be featured once per issue. Featured categories include the following:

  • ELDER: a page reserved for a Poet 60 years and older
  • YOUTH: a page reserved for a Poet 18 years old and younger
  • VISUAL: a page reserved for  a poem with artistic elements included
  • DREAM: a page reserved for a Poet inspired by sleeping dreams
  • LANGUAGE: A page reserved for a poem including at least 5 words in either Mohawk, Onondaga, Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida, or Tuscarora languages. Must include an English translation. Both poems up to 200 words together, total
  • FEATURED REGULAR:  the remaining feature pages are reserved for Poets between 20-59 years old. 

MOSCOT MEMOIRS POETRY
Short acrostic poems featured in the centre of the mag. Six poems will be selected for each issue. Submissions should reflect Ǫgwehoweh life. Featured poets may also submit poems into this section for consideration. 

What is an acrostic poem?
It's a poem where the first letter of each line spells out a word. In this case, the 'word' is MOSCOT (standing for Mohawk, Onondaga, Seneca, Cayuga, Oneida, Tuscarora, the Six Nations).  The layout of a MOSCOT Memoirs poem must:

  • Be six sentences long
  • Have six words per sentence
  • Each sentence must begin, in order, with the letters M,O,S,C,O,T
  • Include a title
