I'm Syęl, Tuscarora of the Six Nations of the Grand River. Welcome to Owę:naʼ - Ǫgwehoweh Poetry Magazine. We chose the Cayuga word owę:na' for our magazine title because it means 'word' or 'voice' in the language. 

Our Mission

We exist to empower Ǫgwehoweh voices through poetry.
We also create opportunities for our writers to get poetic, get published, and get paid. 
We do all of this by creating and maintaining this seasonal poetry magazine dedicated to Our voices.

Our Vision

It is from a deep and sincere place of peace, power, and purpose, that this magazine was created. Every season we will curate and celebrate the unique poetic voices of members of the Six Nations. We strive to remove the barriers of fear and frustration associated with the mainstream publication process. Here, our poets voices will be kindled as we ensure that they have the support and opportunities that I never had. 

As a local magazine, we hope to create a network of community connections and support. The generosity of our sponsors and patrons will:

This magazine is run by and for our community. I know, all too well, the pressure of potent words simmering silently in the soul. Poetry was a powerful way to release that pressure and speak my truths in times of great agony or awe. Poetry is one of many pathways toward reclaiming the peace, power, and principals that are the root of our Ǫgwehoweh hearts. 

Words are medicine. We want to ensure that our words make their healing way to those who need them the most.  Choose to be a part of Owę:naʼ and you choose to move toward a future where our voices are validated, our work is compensated, and our words blaze pathways to healing for ourselves and our community.
